The plans include a 3,600-square-foot facility for art and music classrooms, as well as a 14,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility that would include a gymnasium. Academy plans for more growth

Published Tuesday, December 19, 2006

Hilton Head Christian Academy has submitted preliminary plans for three new buildings to the Town of Hilton Head Island, the first step in planning for the future of a school that continues to grow.

Construction, however, is not likely to start anytime soon.

The plans, drawn up by Bluffton-based Key Engineering, call for the construction of a 7,000-square-foot middle school, a two-story 7,000-square-foot high school and a 14,000-square-foot gymnasium. Parking also would be restructured, and a new parking lot would be added just north of the campus.

Island hospital opens Bluffton satellite office

Published Tuesday, December 12, 2006

Hilton Head Regional Medical Center will open a new Bluffton satellite office in February, a move hospital officials hope will strengthen its foothold in the growing off-island health care market.

The 4,500-square-foot clinic at U.S. 278 and Burnt Church Road will fill the gap between the hospital's main campus on Hilton Head Island and its Bluffton-Okatie Outpatient Center near Sun City Hilton Head.

Initially, the clinic will be open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and have one full-time primary-care physician, Dr. Kamal Patel. He will handle both the urgent- and primary-care units. Within three months after opening, the hospital plans to add two more doctors and expand operating hours into evenings and weekends.

Planned development big enough to become town's hub, official says

Published Thursday, December 7, 2006

A planned development on Buckwalter Parkway is so large it could become the new hub of Bluffton, says Don Blair, chairman of the town's Planning Commission.

"It has the potential of becoming downtown Bluffton." Blair said, "In which case, the old town as we know it now could almost become a little destination or a little curiosity rather than downtown Bluffton."

The development, known as Buckwalter Place, could include 900,000 square feet of commercial space and 900 residential units, Blair said. The Planning Commission will begin discussing how the project should take shape today during a 5:30 p.m. workshop at Bluffton Town Hall.

The new complex has been billed as an upscale urban combination of shops, plazas, offices and multi-family dwellings.

Bluffton school sites OK'd

Published Wednesday, December 6, 2006

Crowded Beaufort County classrooms may be a little less so following a decision by the school board to buy land for three new schools, two of them in Bluffton.

The land will be used for the construction of new elementary and middle schools in the Bluffton area that were approved by voters in a May referendum, as well as a new high school in the Seabrook area that voters originally approved in 2000.

The school board OK'd the purchases at its Tuesday night meeting.

The new Bluffton elementary school will be built on about 18.5 acres at the intersection of Bluffton Parkway and Red Cedar Lane.

The middle school will be built on about 40.5 acres at the intersection of Buck Island and Hyon roads.
