New Schools for Bluffton

District edges closer to choosing land for Bluffton schools

List of site options narrowed to three

Published Thursday, September 21, 2006

The Beaufort County School District has narrowed its search for land in the Bluffton area that can hold two new schools, but it will be a while before the school board has a specific piece of property to vote on.

"We are not wasting a moment to find a site for the new schools," board Chairwoman Dale Friedman said Wednesday. "It's a priority of the board to identify land. Land is getting more expensive every day that passes, and there is less land to choose from."

Voters approved building a new elementary school and a new middle school in the Bluffton area as part of a bond referendum in May.

The bonds also will pay for land to be used for a new north-area high school. On Tuesday, the school board approved a plan to purchase 70 acres in the Seabrook area for the high school.

Continuing Education from USC Coming to Hilton Head Island

Osher classes bring learning opportunities to islanders

Published Wednesday, September 20, 2006
The University of South Carolina Beaufort is now leasing permanent classroom space in the island's Pineland Station complex. The space will primarily be used for continuing-education classes offered through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. In the evening, the university also will use the space for conversational-Spanish and English-as-a-second-language classes.

"I think it's just perfect to be able to have a facility here on the island where (residents) don't have to travel off-island," said Vera Paulson, the facility's director. "They can come right here and take classes and teach classes."

There will be an official grand opening ceremony for the new facility Friday, though classes began earlier this month.
